A scenic and comfortable round-trip journey on the Banff Gondola

Enjoy a smooth, enclosed gondola ride that lifts you high above the town and forested slopes in just minutes. Large windows on all sides let you take in the mountain views as you ascend and descend. It’s a relaxed, all-ages-friendly experience, making it easy for families and first-time visitors to enjoy alpine scenery without strenuous hiking.

Visit the 360-degree rooftop observation deck

Step onto the rooftop deck at the summit for uninterrupted views in every direction. Clear viewing platforms and labeled sightlines help you identify surrounding peaks and valleys. It’s one of the best photo spots in the area, especially around sunrise or late afternoon light.

Knowledgeable and friendly hosts to help you every step of the way

From the base terminal to the summit complex, hosts are available to assist with directions, timing, and activity suggestions. They can point out key landmarks, explain exhibits, and recommend the best viewpoints based on weather conditions. If you’re unsure how to plan your time at the top, just ask! They are more than happy to help you build a simple, enjoyable flow.

Immersive Nightrise events (seasonal)

During the seasonal Nightrise program, the summit transforms into a multi-sensory evening experience with light, sound, and projections. Pathways and viewpoints become interactive spaces that blend mountain stories with creative visuals. It’s designed as a self-guided journey, so you can explore at your own pace after dark.

Above Banff Theatre exploration

The summit theater has a short, engaging film that introduces the landscape, wildlife, and history of the surrounding peaks. It’s a great first stop to add context before heading to the viewing decks and trails. Comfortable seating and concise storytelling make it easy to enjoy even with a tight schedule.

Above Banff Interpretive Centre galleries

Interactive galleries walk you through mountain geology, ecology, and local heritage using hands-on displays and visuals. The exhibits are designed for both adults and children, with layered information for quick browsing or deeper reading. You’ll gain a better understanding of what you’re seeing from the summit viewpoints.

Visitor tips

  • Book your preferred time slot in advance and choose a morning or late-afternoon departure for clearer mountain views and softer lighting for photos.
  • Arrive at least 20–30 minutes before your scheduled ride so you have buffer time for parking, ticket scanning, and boarding queues.
  • Temperatures at the summit are often 5–10°C cooler than the town, so carry an extra warm layer even in summer.
  • Ride up first, explore indoor exhibits and the theaters early, then head to outdoor decks and the boardwalk once you’ve adjusted to the elevation and wind.
  • Walk the summit boardwalk toward Sanson’s Peak for wider, less crowded viewpoints instead of staying only at the main platform.
  • Check the live summit weather camera before you go. The conditions at the top can differ significantly from the base.
  • If clouds roll in, spend time in the interpretive centre and theatre, then revisit the decks. The visibility often changes quickly.
  • Bring a lens cloth or wipes for your camera/phone; temperature shifts between the cabin and the summit can cause brief fogging.
  • Speak to the staff at the summit and ask them for help with planning your trip. They can suggest the best short walks and viewing sides based on that day’s visibility.
